The Democrats are set to take over congress today, and according to several polls they have plenty of support from the American people. Under Speaker of House Nancy Pelosi the Democrats have stated that they are going to move quick and will be introducing new bills within the first 100 hours.
Here is a list of bills they will be introducing:
Raise minimum wage by $2.10 per hour
Decrease tax breaks for the oil industry (Use that money for energy research)
Implement homeland security recommendations as stated in the 9/11 commission
Cut the interest rates for student loans
Allow the prescription drug administrators to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices
I personally support and agree with each of those bills, and it should prove to be beneficial to al Americans. Tax breaks to oil companies should have been cut a long time ago, and with the money Congress will get from decreasing those tax breaks will be put toward researching alternative energy sources.
President Bush and other Republicans are not happy and are complaining that the Democrats will treat them unfairly now that they have the majority. New York Democrat, Rep. Louise Slaughter, said Republicans are “terrified we’re going to treat them the way they treated us.”
Either way the Democrats are now in control and I am personally please at the bills they are introducing and will be anxious to see just how fast they will be implemented. I think what most Americans are anxious about is to see what the Democrats plan to do about the war in Iraq and when they plan on bringing our troops home.
