People Gather to Watch Saddam Hussein’s Execution

Posted by jon8105 on December 29, 2006

Iraqis are already gathering to watch the execution of the former President of Iraq.  Officials are saying that the handover of Saddam will occur just a few minutes before he is executed.  There has been a statement saying Saddam has already been transferred, but the Iraqi and American officials are denying that statement.

According to officials Saddam Hussein will be executed either today or tomorrow and they see no reason for any delays.  However, not everyone will get to see the execution.  Only lawmakers, senior officials, a Muslim cleric and family members of the victims will be able to watch the hanging, though with such an event I am sure we will all see it one day on video.

So we can only sit back, wait and hope that everything goes OK.  Due to the tension involved in this situation, officials need to make sure everything goes as planned.  Some Iraqis could get upset if Saddam’s body is disrespected and Americans will get upset if for some reason the execution gets delayed.

It is Official:  Saddam Hussein is to be executed Tonight!

Polymer Gel to Help Protect Against HIV/AIDS

Posted by jon8105 on December 28, 2006

Researchers are working on a polymer gel that when rubbed around the vaginal area will createa thin protective layer, similar to that of a condom.  The difference is that when semen comes in contact with this polymer gel a lethal dose (to the HIV virus) of chemicals is released.  As of now this technology is still years in the making but is showing pretty decent results.  Researchers say the gel will more than likely not be 100 percent effective, but the goal is to have it prove over 90 percent effective.  The best part about this technology is that it gives women the means of protecting themselves instead of always having to rely on their partner.  However, for now the condom is still the most successful at protecting against HIV/AIDS.  Also, if these results are successful then researchers say it is possible to use the same concept to help protect against pregnancy.  more info >>

John Edwards Decides to Run for President

Posted by jon8105 on December 28, 2006

John Edwards just announced he is going to run in the 2008 presidential race.  Edwards believes the United States is unstable and needs to re-establish its leadership role.  Edwards is looking to put cuts on poverty and global warming while increasing support for community service.

Though John Edwards did vote to go to war with Iraq he is now regretting that decision due to the leadership in the war under President Bush.  Therefore, Edwards wants to cut back on the troops in Iraq.  Edwards also criticized the Bush administration saying that they did not do enough during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

This could put Edwards running against Senator Kerry if in fact Kerry decides to re-run for President.  Also, Edwards will have a lot of grounds to make up if he is to compete with Clinton and Obama, both of which have gained a lot of support.

It comes as no surprise that Bush and his administration would be used in campaigning for the 2008 Presidential race, especially since it was used in the recent November Elections.  I personally am tired of politicians talking and would actually like to see something done!

Parents of US Troops Journey to Iraq

Posted by jon8105 on December 27, 2006

An organization called Move America Forward put together a trip that carried some parents of US troops to Iraq.  The reason is because the parents wanted to know where their child was killed and that maybe they could better understand what happened.  This group left in early November but was only able to make it to Arbil, which is the capital of Kurdistan in Norther Iraq.  Sadr City, which is the area the parents wanted to go was too dangerous.  However, the local government and troops showed great support to the parents for their sacrifice.  The group is looking to return some time in the near future, except they hope this time more families will join them.  The trip cost over $5000 per person but most of the parents received donations from across the US which included checks from soldiers!

US Deaths in Iraq Surpass Those from the 9/11 Attacks

Posted by jon8105 on December 26, 2006

On Christmas day four more US soldiers died which put the death toll at 2,977 since the beginning of the Iraq war in early 2003.  This death toll surpassed the 9/11 attacks which claimed the lives of 2,973 people from various countries(which includes 2,749 from the towers, 184 from pentagon crash, and 80 on United Flight 93).  President Bush is saying that we must stay on the offensive in order to keep the terrorists from attacking US soil again, which in turn puts our brave soldiers in harms way.  So while the debate continues here as to whether or not the US should still be fighting in Iraq, our soldiers are over there fighting nevertheless.  Let us not forget the sacrifice the soldiers are making for us everyday, because they are the ones on the front line, not the politicians that are over here confused about what direction we need to be heading.  God Bless our American Soldiers!!!

Patients Beware: Your Doctor May Be Suffering from Lack of Sleep

Posted by jon8105 on December 22, 2006

According to a study doctors present a greater risk to patients after they have worked long shifts.  Some of the doctors confessed that after they work 24 hours straight they sometimes forget things, look up the wrong drugs and in one case the doctor poked herself with a needle.  Residents say that the reason they have to work long shifts is because they are considered “cheap labor”.  Also, the transfer of patients between doctors is a risk to patients and has even caused a few deaths.  So, for the safety of the patient doctors need to cut down on their long shifts and need a proper procedure for patient transfer.   more info >>

Beware of These Internet Hacker Scams in 2007

Posted by jon8105 on December 21, 2006

Experts believe that in 2007 internet hackers will find new avenues to scam people.  Right now hackers use email to try and get personal information from individuals and businesses.  But in 2007, hackers will use instant messaging, online community websites (like MySpace) and cell phones to commit their fraudulent activities.  The main concern for security experts is the use of cell phones, because once they are hacked into it will be easy to obtain email addresses, contacts and other personal information.  It is going to be very difficult, if not impossible, to track down these hackers.  The reason is because the internet offers hackers speed and anonymity which is required for them to make money fast while maintaining secrecy.  more info >>

Early Release As Possible Solution to California’s Prison System Problem?

Posted by jon8105 on December 20, 2006

California has the largest prison system in the United States, housing 170, 000 inmates.  As of now they are operating at 70% over their designed inmate capacity, and some experts are saying the inmates and guards are at risk due to this problem.  Therefore, a federal court is giving California 6 months to greatly reduce the number of inmates.  California state officials have sent some inmates to other states, but due to the overcrowding of most states in the US it will be almost impossible to transfer enough inmates to satisfy the federal ruling.  Another option that was mentioned is the early release of inmates, which I personally hope is an option they do not choose.  more info >>
